A large percentage of the young men in the village must have died in the second world war; there are a lot of names and it's not a densely populated area.
Living in an era when most of my generation (and younger) can't imagine a conflict on the scale of WWII, never mind the possibility of being conscripted, I hope that the inability to fully comprehend the reality of the sacrifice made by those who fought and died never results in an inability to commemorate and appreciate their lives.
