No Haiku today - I think the shock of coming up with one about a coffee lid has robbed me of inspiration.
I recently came across (via Memepool) a site running a league table of viral websites. I liked Crying While Eating.
Then there's Delivr - another inventive use for Flickr. Unfortunately I've never been able to get it to work with anything other that their preset tags.
Ringtone Dancer is also worth a look, if only for episode 4. Check out the guy in the foreground with the black jacket and the coffee cup - the shrug of tired bemusement is priceless - perfect comic timing.

Hexham Evening
By the river, just as the light was beginning to fade.
It was raining lightly - when it stopped the water was uncannily still, perfectly smooth.
As for exif information, if you look at the flickr page of this photo it appears that only the make and model of camera is listed. The information is all there, though.
If you use Firefox, take a look at FxIF, an extension that allows you to view any exif information by right clicking an image.

In the Botanical Gardens in Durham, there is a large wooden block (about six by two feet, from memory) with a pattern of numbers on it. I don't know why.

I've been playing around with the EXIF data from my Fuji S5000. I don't know how much of it (beyond camera make and model) Flickr shows, but my next Friday upload should have more information on its Flickr page.

All the blossom has gone from the trees... it's lying in piles underneath them, ready to be blown away in the wind.

Off to Northumberland today, hopefully to get some good landscape shots with my new Fuji Finepix S5000.

Sage
On my birthday, I decided to take an tour around Newcastle on an open top tourist bus - despite having lived here for more than five years, I saw parts of the city I didn't know existed.
During the tour, the Sage was described as 'the most dramatic urban sight in Europe'.
That might be an exaggeration, but it's certainly striking.

Self Portrait with Ear
The espion was refusing to take pictures, so I held it near my ear to hear if it was beeping (to let me know there was a problem) or just dead.
And no, I don't really have skin like porridge.

Goat
For one of my favourite days of the year, one of my favourite photos from my espion reserve. Taken in the Botanical Gardens in Durham.
I rounded a corner, past the bamboo, and whatever-it-is (a goat, I think) stared at me for a moment before running off behind some trees.

Metro Trains
A sign for Newcastle's underground system (which is cleaner and more efficient than the London tube).
Having been in London for the majority of this weekend, I have recent, first hand experience. I wanted to take the Northern line northbound today but it was closed from Belsize Park to Edgeware.
One difference between the two underground systems: in London I saw a few people with beer cans or bottles.
Nothing wrong with that, necessarily - but on the Newcastle Metro it's (at least according to several prominently placed posters I saw on my way to the airport) an arrestable offence to have an open container of alcohol.
Enough waffle for tonight - I got off the plane about an hour ago and need to get some sleep.

Trespass
The start of the platform at Wylam railway station in Northumberland.
The next few images all have a vague railway theme to them - not because I'm a trainspotter, but simply because it's the easiest way of getting to various parts of Northumberland and it provides plenty of photo opportunities.

Checkpoint Charlie
As it was VE day this week it seemed appropriate to upload a consequence of the end of WWII for my Friday photo. Taken last time I was in Berlin, in 2003.
On a completely different note, the radio (and pretty much everyone else) is reporting that Manchester United (aka Merchandising United) has been bought by an evil American leprechaun, to the consternation of thousands of Filipino/Korean/Mongolian fans worldwide. Cue great wailing and gnashing of teeth.
According to one caller to BBC Radio Five this morning, Glazer should rename the club 'the Salford Quays Buccaneers'. Couldn't happen to a nicer team.

Lavender
I'm considering whether to turn off comments after yesterday's spamming. What, exactly, is the point of spamming the comments sections on obscure photoblogs?
That would be a shame though - on the rare occasions that I post something out of the ordinary and someone comments, I really appreciate reading people's opinions.

VE Day
The village war memorial in Stocksfield, Northumberland.
A large percentage of the young men in the village must have died in the second world war; there are a lot of names and it's not a densely populated area.
Living in an era when most of my generation (and younger) can't imagine a conflict on the scale of WWII, never mind the possibility of being conscripted, I hope that the inability to fully comprehend the reality of the sacrifice made by those who fought and died never results in an inability to commemorate and appreciate their lives.

I'm off to vote today. I am trying to avoid any contact with election material (which, stupidly, I have been reading rather than binning straight away).
Nothing in it has convinced me to vote for a candidate, but I changed my mind about who to vote for last night as a result of a particularly mendacious and mean spirited leaflet sent on behalf of the candidate who would have had my vote. It was as if they had deliberately worded it to remind me why I didn't want to vote for him.

Grey's Column
Grey's Column in the centre of Newcastle.
It may not be the geographical centre, but it's a focal point.
It's difficult photographing something like Grey's Column in an interesting way.
I did a spot of tweaking with this shot, of course, but the extreme contrast was a happy accident.

From the Shadows
Animals are usually scared off by the annoying beeping sound made by the Espion when it takes a photo.
This cat was no exception - I just managed to get it on camera before it raced off underneath a car (a parked car, not a moving one!)

Unitarian
At some point I will have to add another photo to give this one some context. This is a sign on the side of a Unitarian church in Newcastle.
It's hard to explain why I like the building, but it looks slightly out of place and I imagine it would be better suited somewhere hot, like Malta.
