On a bridge near Northumbria University.
Don't quite understand the point of this but it's not nearly the weirdest bit of graffiti on the bridge. That would be the weird cartoons with french captions.

Flora
Flowers at Allen Banks in Northumberland. I'm looking forward to going back there in the winter, when it'll be much quieter but equally worth the visit.

On a Rock
A macro from the rock pools at Alnmouth. As is often the case when I post things like this, I have no idea what these creatures are.
I have a nagging thought that I should (because they're probably not very rare and I almost certainly used to know.)

Footprints
Wet footprints at Alnmouth station.
I went down to the Quayside yesterday evening in the hope of getting some good shots of the Tall Ships.
It was packed with people, so much so that it was often hard to move along the streets - before the big events were happening, so I went for a curry instead.
I do have a couple of epsion shots of the big wheel - but none of the ships, which were moored (with their sails down, naturally.)

River
The river Allen in Northumberland, near Ridley Hall.
On an unrelated theme (unless 'water' is a link - tenuously) the Tall Ships' Races are in Newcastle for the next few days. I'm hoping to pay a visit tomorrow and get a few good shots with the Espion.

Alarmed
A big black door near Grey's monument in Newcastle. Not ominous enough to be an entrance to hell, though.

This Stone
A commemorative stone at a building near Ouseburn in Newcastle (on the way to The Cluny.)
I can't remember what it says, but it's just possible to make out that the stone was laid by a Very Reverend Canon (not sure which office this relates to, several possibly) in the reign of Queen Victoria.

Fluke
Exploring rockpools is one of the things I've loved doing since I was small.
Alnmouth has some good ones; under a brightly coloured stone was this fluke - which clearly wasn't trying to camouflage itself.

Foxglove
This is about the closest thing to a flower macro in my photostream. A foxglove (at least, I think it is) at Allen Banks in Northumberland.

Mystic Spiral
At the beach in Alnmouth, a group of people - around twenty or so - were standing in a circle around a couple of musicians, dancing to a song about a 'mystic spiral'. Unusual.
At first I thought they were singing about a 'minty spider', but that would have been insanely strange, rather than just strange.

Road Closed
Sign on a road through a forest in Jesmond Dene - almost all of the roads through there are closed presently. It's great not to have to look out for cars coming round corners or speeding up behind.

Algae
I came across this pool of bright green and red algae in a forest. It looks like the kind of thing that digests small mammals.
I've had to remove the flash Flickr badge on the sidebar - it's been broken (due to problems at Flickr) for a couple of days. I prefer the HTML version anyway.

Pig
Pets' corner in Jesmond, Newcastle upon Tyne. There are also a few very noisy peacocks - I was at a conference last year in one of the nearby buildings and the proceedings were made infinitely more interesting by their sreeching-squawking interruptions.

Towers
I have to confess that I've forgotten where this was taken.
I have a feeling that it might be the very beautiful building near Newcastle Central Station that's currently being used as a Yates Wine Lodge.

One more mention of the Flickrwall - a number of group members went down there yesterday and there are a number of additions well worth checking out.

Introducing: the Flickrwall
Rather than post another Espion photo today, I’ve chosen something to illustrate the story of the Flickrwall – Newcastle upon Tyne’s most dynamic ultra-low tech creative space and our own bit of Flickr right here in the centre of the city.
Despite having passed it countless times since I’ve been living in Newcastle, and having noticed the ‘Secret Entrance’ arrow before, I’d only walked down the Flickrwall alley once or twice. Flanked by abandoned buildings on both sides (at least one of which was used as a squat two or three years ago), the Flickrwall alley didn’t have too much to recommend it as an attraction - before one Flickr user sparked everyone’s interest.
Iambigred started the Flickrwall by chalking this message, which was followed by another and another; since then the Flickrwall has developed into a combination of community space and collaborative artwork (link to an earlier incarnation).
If you’re in the area and feel the urge for some spontaneous creative expression, head down to the Flickrwall … and share your additions with us at the Flickrwall group.
A number of flickrwallers have blogs and have posted about the flickrwall already:

Iambigred
Sam Judson
Lastly, if you know who this mystery flickrwall admirer is – please leave a comment in the group (especially if it’s you!)

Listening to the news this morning makes me proud to be British. There's clear determination and unity.
Update: One exception, hardly unexpected - Saddam's mini-me has been making excuses for the killers and the fascist, imperialist ideology of Al Qaeda affiliated organisations: Galloway "dipping his poisonous tongue in a pool of blood"
An antidote to Galloway's vitriol: Christopher Hitchens.

A spraypainted fence on a sunny day (I forget where, it was near a golf club.)
V. busy at the moment - hence the declining quality of the descriptions. Have a few things to post about though, e.g. Firefox + Greasemonkey, geotagging scripts etc

The entrance to the Laing Art Gallery, which I keep meaning to visit again sometime, but never seem to get round to it.

Rainbow Yawn
A common sight on a Sunday morning around Newcastle, the average pavement pizza is made with only the finest ingredients - a sumptuous cocktail of kebab meat, lager, alcopops and stomach acid.

Um Bongo
"Way down deep in the middle of the Congo, a hippo took an apricot, a guava and a mango. He stuck it with the others, and he danced a dainty tango.
The rhino said, "I know, we'll call it Um Bongo", Um Bongo, Um Bongo, They drink it in the Congo."
I bet they don't though.
If you want to hear the scandalous claims for yourself, you can download the Um Bongo songo [500k .mp3]

Lucky for some. I'm off on another urban safari today, hunting round Newcastle for interesting locations.
I just hope the weather clears up - it's looking a bit grim right now (0730).

Seahorses
The council buildings in the Haymarket in Newcastle upon Tyne, across the road from the University of Newcastle.
There are a couple of complementary photographs, including a close up of the seahorses that ring the top of the tower, over at Flickr.
Used a circular polarising filter for this - one of the first opportunities I've had to use it on a bright, sunny day.
